Stone Owl Cottage is the realization of a life long dream involving the ownership of a house made of stone. Somehow, I always knew I’d live in a stone house; it just took a long time to actualize that dream.
I left teaching in 1997 and began working for a small private company as a copy editor. Internet and a great boss enabled me to work from home which meant I could live virtually anywhere I wanted. After almost ten years living and working in Istanbul, I longed for nature, the peace of the country side and clean, fresh air. I had been coming to this part of Turkey for at least eight years for long weekends and semester breaks. The climate here was not unlike that of Greece where I had lived for almost seven years. In the fall of 2001, I met a sister and brother from Istanbul who had just bought a house in a tiny village six miles from the Aegean coastline. They bought it for almost nothing by western standards. A couple of weeks later, I went house hunting and found a property in the same village that had a building with four strong stone walls and a very good roof. When I first saw the property, it was being used to house sheep in the winter. The price was certainly within my limited budget and we signed the papers. And I was a homeowner for the first time in my life! I spent the next few years restoring this property.
It has grown into a cozy, comfortable house with an attached guest house, two studios, a number of outbuildings, including an outdoor bread oven and three gardens. The newest occupants of the Cottage include Rudy, Fritz, Lucy and the lovable Ms. Mimi…my fur babes. Oh, I shouldn’t forget Ossie cat, formerly a housecat in Istanbul, now a full fledged village primadona. We all now live in relative modern comfort here at the Stone Owl Cottage.
